ImageBank Collections Policy
Introduction
The Centre for Bioscience, the Higher Education Academy ImageBank
aims to build a central repository for bioscience image assets,
and in so doing aims to provide an online shared bioscience
image resource which is freely available and copyright cleared
for educational use.
The Centre for Bioscience ImageBank has been developed entirely
from images and descriptive text contributed by academics, researchers,
Learned Societies, industry and individuals with rights cleared
for educational purposes.
This resource has been funded by the Centre for Bioscience,
the Higher Education Academy (formerly the LTSN Centre for Bioscience
) and the JISC, the Joint Information Systems Committee (http://www.jisc.ac.uk/).
Collection
Description
Subject coverage:
The subjects covered by the Centre for Bioscience ImageBank
reflects that of the Centre for Bioscience’s remit and
covers the diverse range of disciplines within the life, biomedical,
food and agricultural sciences.
Image types:
ImageBank supports various image types:
-
Images submitted on a CD by
post are accepted in most file formats eg. TIFF, JPEG, GIF,
BMP, MPEG, AVI, SWF, PPT).
-
Ideally, images should be
approximately 800 pixels across and should be adequate for
print out. Although smaller images are also accepted.
-
Images submitted online or
by e-mail should be JPEG (or GIFF for drawings) to reduce
file sizes.
-
Once accepted, GIFF and JPEG
images displayed on-line are less than 2.5MB (usually less
than 1 MB), and the file size of a submitted image will be
reduced if necessary.
-
ImageBank supports various
file formats: GIFF, JPEG, SWF, PPT, Windows Media, JAVA Applette,
HTML.
Descriptive Text
We believe one of the strengths of ImageBank is the potential
to provide associated descriptive text written by those who
have substantial knowledge of the subject matter. Where possible,
we request that contributors submit a description to accompany
the images they wish to contribute. Information, where possible,
should include, species name, common name, where the photograph
was taken, habitat, description of image, preferably written
in a learning and teaching context. We appreciate that not all
contributors will be in a position to submit text. We reserve
the right to edit the information.
Notice Regarding
Copyright
Copyright of the images remains at all times with the original
copyright holder. The author (creator) of the images (usually
the contributor) is required to sign a Letter of Agreement with
the Centre for Bioscience to confirm that the images are theirs
to contribute and that no third party (other than the contributor’s
employer) holds copyright to the images. The Letter of agreement
will be sent to the author on receipt of the images and prior
to the images going 'live'.
Where copyright resides with the employer, Centre for Bioscience
staff will seek to clear copyright with the contributor’s
employer.
On downloading the image(s), the user agrees
to clearly acknowledging the author/contributor, the copyright
holder and the Centre for Bioscience ImageBank on every use
of the image(s).
Principal Sources
of Supply
Academics, Learned societies, industry, individuals.
Selection Criteria
-
Images should be of good
quality e.g. of sufficient resolution to distinguish features,
in focus, and contain a clear subject with no unnecessary
background.
-
Images must be relevant to
the Centre for Bioscience ImageBank subject coverage (see
above).
-
Currently there is confusion
with respect to images containing human tissue, this may result
in delay of such images being placed on line. We are currently
awaiting the Human Tissue Bill before applying a collections
policy with respect to images which may require patient consent.
-
Images of clearly identifiable
individuals are not placed on-line unless consent from the
individual has been obtained.
Quality Assurance
Quality Assurance is a significant challenge for this resource
which is built upon contributions of thousands of images submitted
from many diverse sources.
Substantial effort has been invested by Centre for Bioscience
staff to ensure that descriptive text and images placed on-line
reach a high standard.
Stringent editing, cataloguing and validation procedures ensure
the quality of this resource. All cataloguing criteria have
been clearly defined and cataloguing procedures developed. Every
image is catalogued, descriptions edited, and images and text
validated by staff with substantial subject knowledge. Where
new information comes to light, we review records and update
as appropriate.
