What's new image- David Moss © Henry Wellcome Laboratory for Cell Imaging, University

We have a new collection in ImageBank!

Leeds University Faculty of Biological Sciences Photographic Competition 2008.

The Faculty of Biological Sciences at Leeds University have kindly allowed us to host the images entered for the Faculty Photographic competition in 2008.The images were originally exhibited at the Faculty of Biological Sciences Postgraduate Symposium in 2008.

See them here!

The categories for entrants to choose from were :

Medicine

Molecules

Microscopy

People in Science

Science outside the Laboratory

Natural History and Landscapes

Animal Behaviour.

The aim of the competition was to find ‘images that relate to research or teaching and which are beautiful, fascinating, intriguing, amusing, or maybe all of these' , and which have ‘ a stunning visual image with scientific relation to your research .'

I am sure you will agree that the entries to the competition more than meet these aims and that this is a fascinating collection of images.

New for April 2008

The Ijsbrand Kramer Collection

We are adding a new and exciting collection of images to ImageBank.

They are detailed drawings showing various aspects of cell biology and biochemistry. The images are the work of Ijsbrand Kramer ( University of Bordeaux ), who has very generously allowed his images to be included in ImageBank. See the images here.

Ijsbrand Kramer describes below how and why the images were created:

'These images were created because:

- First and foremost, I take pleasure in making illustrations.

- I also take the point of view that I only fully understand something if I can illustrate it (I am the student of my own course).

- I wished to organize my introductory course to cell biology around a richly illustrated multimedia document so that students can resource themselves any time, anywhere and any place (where there is an internet connection)

- Finally I find it important that university teachers provide some personal touch to their teaching: original teaching method, original illustrations and/or a link with their research. University teachers also have to provide some kind of role model (other than just being the translator of one of the outstanding textbooks of cell biology) in order to avoid a too reductive and depreciatory approach of higher education.

The images have been made with CorelDraw, PhotoShop, VMD (Visual Molecular Dynamics, University of Illinois ), PyMol (Delano Scientific) and using information from my favourite annotated databases SwissProt, http://www.expasy.org/sprot/ and Protein Data Bank http://www.wwpdb.org/

I am very grateful to my ex-colleague, the emeritus professor, Gérard Tramu for his critical analysis of my texts and images and I thank the illustrator Graham Johnson for being an inspiring mentor.

All my teaching resources, both in French and English, can be found on the website of Cell Biology Promotion at   http://www.cellbiol.net '

The images will be added over the next few weeks. They represent a new development for ImageBank, and we hope to add more images like these in the future. We hope you will find them useful – let us know what you think by completing our Feedback form or writing to us at: imagebank@leeds.ac.uk

FREE Digitization of Slides or Photos

We continue to offer free digitization for slides and photos submitted to ImageBank.

Please contact us for further information if you have a bioscience collection, large or small, which you would like digitized and shared with the wider educational community.

Mostly Marine Collection This is a collection of images contributed by James Rosindell, one of the winners in our Photographic Competition. As the title suggests most of these fascinating images are of marine species, some from locations in the tropics, but many taken around the coast of the British Isles .  There are also some excellent images of snakes and frogs included in the collection.

The Buglife Collection Buglife, the Invertebrate Conservation trust has contributed a large number of images to ImageBank including images of maritime soft rock cliffs, home to a number of rare invertebrates. This neglected habitat is under threat, and Buglife is working to secure its future.

ImageBank Photographic Competition 2006 Most of the photographs entered in our competition are now included in ImageBank .

The Grove House Experimental Gardens Collection was added to Imagebank in 2006. ImageBank has been very fortunate in acquiring a large collection of high quality images from Grove House Experimental Gardens . The images show the wide range of plants grown at the Gardens and some of the experimental techniques employed there. There are images of tropical and sub-tropical species, and of various plant pests and diseases. Also, some wonderful images of orchids.

Grove House Experimental Gardens are owned by the University of Leeds , and are an important facility of Faculty of Biological Sciences. For many years they have provided teaching and research opportunities for both staff and students. The Gardens are currently managed by Mr. Martin Lappage, who

suggested that a collection of slides, many of which were taken at the Gardens, should be made available for inclusion in ImageBank.

The images were taken by Mr. Ken Redshaw who worked as a Horticultural Technician and Gardens Manager at the Universities Agricultural Sciences Experimental Garden from 1968 and later at Grove House Experimental Gardens , following the amalgamation of the two facilities, until his retirement in 1996. Ken is an accomplished photographer and has also contributed a large number of slides from his own collection.

Mr. Martin Lappage, the Manager of the Gardens,   was responsible for identifying plants shown in the images and for writing many of the descriptions accompanying the images.

To find out more about Grove House Experimental Gardens see their web pages at: http://www.fbs.leeds.ac.uk/garden/index.htm
