Pisco Algal Taxonomic Database
http://www.piscoweb.org/c gi-bin/qml/newalgaequery. qml
|
The Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) is a research consortium involving marine scientists from four universities along the West Coast of America. The scientists at these universities collaborate on integrated studies of the nearshore ecosystems of the West Coast and have put together a marine algae database with their findings. The database includes predominantly photographs of fresh and pressed intertidal marine algae from the west coast of the United States, although images from other areas are present. Each image is accompanied by collection information and the current species name plus some basic descriptive information which may include the size and colour of the algae, its distribution and abundance, zone and habitat. This site has a vast amount of images which are organised and well documented.

The bioluminescence web page
http://www.lifesci.ucsb.e du/~biolum/
|
This site has over 30 interesting images of bioluminescent organisms. Each image has a short caption explaining the actual size of the organism and the way in which it produces luminescence. This site also provides information on the chemical reactions which act to produce luminescence, which is most often found in marine organisms in the dark expanse of the deep sea. This may cover only a very small area but it is very interesting.

The Sea Slug Forum
http://www.seaslugforum.n et
|
This site, hosted by the Australian Museum, was created to generate interest in this comparatively little-known group of animals. It should certainly do that. There is a comprehensive species list with excellent descriptions of the animals, and information about their biology. The images are of extremely high quality and really do justice to these beautiful animals.
There is also a General Topics section, which covers all aspects of sea slug biology, and is also accompanied by high quality images. There are also links to other related sites, and a message forum, so new information is constantly being added to the site.
