This site is run by the British Universities Film and Video Council. It collects together moving image websites from all scientific subjects and provides an evaluation of each one. There are more than 600 moving image websites collected at present and it is growing at approx 10 a month. The sites are categorised by academic discipline.

A website containing over 30,000 natural history pictures, mainly British in origin, which are indexed by Google. The images are intended to illustrate biodiversity, and as an aid to identification and are arranged in the normal phylogenic hierarchy. The subject area includes habitat pictures, macro-shots, close-ups and microscopy.
Copyright information: The images on this website are subject to copyright laws. If they are intended for non-commercial use which furthers science research, education, or wildlife conservation, they can be used free of charge. Permission may be given for small numbers of images to be used for non-commercial purposes, which do not fulfil these requirements. Around seven thousand images which include those of agriculture, chemistry, geology, IT, astronomy, computer science, physics, biology, engineering and health science. There are links to several collections and simulations in each subject area, with peer reviews and memebers comments.

The Exploratorium is a science museum which has been online since 1993 and it is one of the most visited science museum websites in the world. The digital assets section of the website is defined as content from different media (e.g., photographs, video, text, audio, Web pages, etc.) preserved in digital form. The site contains over 700 digital images which range from photographs to cartoons. There is no particular subject to which the images are limited to but it is possible to search the site by conceptual area (life sciences maybe a particularly relevant area to browse or search).
Copyright information: The digital assets are protected by copyright and trademark laws, and are the property of the Exploratorium. The images may be downloaded and used for educational or personal use.

The Biological Tutorials and Animations section of this website provides a range of teaching materials for subjects such as the heart, cell biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology. The Photos section also has some dissection powerpoints, which are useful for teaching and learning about general physiology and, in particular, the heart.

Over 100 images of living biological images are available on this site. Some movies are also provided. When the mouse moves over the image a short description is also provided. The images are diverse and of good quality and would be well suited for educational purposes.

This is the bio-database of the Biological digital Teaching Resource Library of the University of Alberta. It offers images, animations, and video clips with descriptive text for each item. Subjects range from microbiology to higher plants, but the emphasis is on zoology.

This is the education section of the commercial site Dennis Kunkel Microscopy Inc. The Education Image Library contains over 1500 micrographs covering a huge range of biological and medical subjects photographed with both light and electron microscopes. These images show plant and animal cells and structures in incredible detail, and each image is accompanied by descriptive text. Quick search and browsing facilities make access to the images easy.

This is the website of the Ulster Museum Sciences Division. Habitas is a collection of databases containing species information and site records for wild and garden plants, European orchids,dragonflies, ground beetles, ladybirds, lichens, butterflies and moths, invertebrates, mammals, amphibians and reptiles, marine life, and rocks and fossils, Excellent species descriptions and distribution maps are in many cases accompanied by images, which serve as useful aids to identificaion.
