This site is a rapidly expanding resource providing information on the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, which is used as a model organism for the study of development. Within this site, there is a section on neuronal images which is colour-coded for ease of use, a Mind of a Worm section which provides comprehensive information on the nervous system of the worm and a TEM archive providing transmission electron micrographs (TEMs) of sections of the worm. There is also a slidable worm which allows the user to navigate through the TEMs in order and a wormtiler to allow viewing of the TEMs at high resolution. A very comprehensive site.

This site includes useful animations on cardiovascular embryology, head and neck development, gastrointestinal embryology, limb development and urinary and reproductive embryology. Each section has a selection of animations along with pre-animation tests and post-animation tests to allow the user to determine how much has been learnt from the animation. The animations are accompanied by captions to clarify important points throughout. This is an excellent way to learn about human embryology for all levels.

This site provides 3D detail of zebrafish vascular anatomy. The information is provided by the Weinstein lab at the NIH. Zebrafish are a useful study model for developmental biology and this sort of information is useful to those studying this field. 3D fluorescent angiograms can be viewed of any region of the embryo at any stage of development from 1-7 days post-fertilisation. Although the images are standard, the descriptions are concise and accurate.

The Virtual Human Embryo

This is a digital image database of serially sectioned human embryos from the Carnegie collection. The aim of this website is to make the images from the Carnegie collection available for teaching and research purposes. The site has two components; the Digitally Reproduced Embryonic Morphology (DREM) project is the area with the images in. The aim of this area is to have a series of image databases, one for each of the 23 stages of embryo development, which will be available in full form on a CD. There are online demos available now for several stages, with more coming soon. These demos include 3D images of the embryo at that stage, different sections of the embryo at that stage and a scan mode which allows the user to view an animation of a scan through the sections of the embryo.

The Exploratorium is a science museum which has been online since 1993 and it is one of the most visited science museum websites in the world. The digital assets section of the website is defined as content from different media (e.g., photographs, video, text, audio, Web pages, etc.) preserved in digital form. The site contains over 700 digital images which range from photographs to cartoons. There is no particular subject to which the images are limited to but it is possible to search the site by conceptual area (life sciences maybe a particularly relevant area to browse or search).

This resource allows the user to create cell models, define cellular geometry, specify simulations and analyze the simulation results. There are three components to this software, a modelling framework which represents the physiology of the virtual cell, a mathematical framework which solves mathematical problems encountered during cellular modelling, and a biological interface which allows the user to input easily and then edit using a maths editor. The software has been made as user-friendly as possible for the biological community. The user must register in order to use this resource.

This is an invaluable resource which allows the user to view the human chromosomes and find out which genes have been found on each one. The user simply clicks on a chromosome for more detail and then clicks on a region of the chromosome for further detail. The information is also available as a poster. The chromosomes are colour-coded according to the banding seen under a microscope and the staining intensity. The centromeres and stalks are also colour coded. The images are accompanied by a Gene Gateway which has tutorials and guides to enable novices to find further information on the internet relating to the human genome project. It must be noted that this information is for educational use and should not be used for medical purposes.

The Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) is a research consortium involving marine scientists from four universities along the West Coast of America. The scientists at these universities collaborate on integrated studies of the nearshore ecosystems of the West Coast and have put together a marine algae database with their findings. The database includes predominantly photographs of fresh and pressed intertidal marine algae from the west coast of the United States, although images from other areas are present. Each image is accompanied by collection information and the current species name plus some basic descriptive information which may include the size and colour of the algae, its distribution and abundance, zone and habitat. This site has a vast amount of images which are organised and well documented.

British Universities Newsreel Database (BUND)

This site is a collection of cinema newreels intended for academic use. The BUND has been gathering these newsreels since 1969. The newsreel database contains over 160,000 stories which represent 21 British newsreels and cinemagazines. There are also copies of 80,000 commentary scripts, cameramans dope sheets, assignments sheets, shot lists and other original documentation of the newsreels in the database. Interesting information on the history of newsreels and how they were produced is also provided on this website. The newsreels are available through commercial and public sector film archives, commercial video releases, and over the internet as a streaming video. In order to view some of the images the user may have to register with the appropriate site.

This website has a vast amount of wildlife images and refers to itself as the Noahs Ark of the internet era. There are three chapters to search; the Globally Endangered Chapter, which contains images of the worlds endangered and protected species; the British Chapter, which features endangered and protected species from Britain and the DEFRA pilot project to aid the identification of corals. The aim of the site is to collect all the rare images and information about endangered and protected species from around the world, and create an audio-visual record of the 12,000 expected endangered species as stated by the IUCNs Red Lists of Threatened Species. There is also an area for children (Planet ARKive) and an area for teachers and parents (Education ARKive).

As the name suggests, it is a collection of plant images including links to image sets, course pages, and teaching tools for botany, systematics, mycology, and vegetation of Wisconsin. There are over 6,000 pictures in this collection, which are mainly targeted as a survey of the plant kingdom and related species although there are some links to fungi and some woody genera.

The longest running plant periodical, Curtis Botanical Magazine, has a digital presentation which represents 1050 records which have been published since 1787 and is still in print. Included in this presentation are a selection of images from the publications, which can be searched using keywords or alphabetically. The images are of high quality and are accompanied by taxonomy and distribution information.

Online art collections at the Natural History Museum

There are three online collections; Nature Navigator, William J MacGillivray and Endeavour botanical illustrations. Nature Navigator included over 6000 original botanical paintings from the libraries of the natural history museum. The William J MacGillivray collection contains 214 images by this famous scottish naturalist. The Endeavour collections are devoted to the drawings of Sydney Parkinson (1745-1771) whilst he was on the HMS endeavour.

A collection of images including general botany, trees, fungi, plant diversity and vegetation. All sections of this site provide a wealth of interesting images. The section covering General Botany has some excellent images of plants and the structure of their cells and tissues. Mitosis, meiosis, diffusion and osmosis and other plant-related processes are also covered. In most cases there is little additional information given, although this is more than compensated for by the quality and quantity of the images, and the wide range of topics covered. The site is well laid out and easy to use.

This site documents the species present on the island of Hainan, China. This island is known to be one of the diversity hotspots of the world. Most of the work on this site is from chinese scientists working on the island. At the moment, there are just 17 species documented here but the numbers are set to increase. The site is well organised and comprehensive information is provided with each image.

This cleared leaf collection from the University of California Museum of Paleontology in Berkley provides images and information on fossil leaves to help researchers determine past climates and diet patterns of ancient herbivores. The collection contains over 600 images of cleared leaves, with many more due soon. Taxonomy and geographic information are provided with each image along with the proposed age of the leaf. This site is quite specialised although the images are interesting.

It is part of BioWeb, a collaborative Web site produced by faculty members from 14 different University of Wisconsin System universities and centres. Images are accessed via links to several databases representing different collections. Each database offers different access routes and end contents. Coverage includes high resolution photographs, slides and illustrations.

This site aims to provide information about the life-cycle, breeding and food plants of a large number of species of European and north African moths and butterflies. The site is easy to use searchable by family, Latin or English name.
There are several images for each species, often of both adult and larval phases. Each image is accompanied by details of where and when the image was taken. A list of food plants is given, along with names of similar species. The images are of very high quality, and this is reason enough for browsing the site. It is also an invaluable identification tool.

This is a splendid site about the fascinating group of organisms - octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus - that make up the Cephalopods. There are numerous images which show the beauty and diversity of these animals, and the accompanying educational content is excellent, and includes cephalopod lesson plans to download from the site. The images are the copyright of the authors, whose names are given along with the images.
The implication is that permission would be required to download images for personal use, but there is an email address for Dr. James B. Wood, inviting questions about the site.

There is a huge amount of information on this site, with information on the taxonomy, morphology , habitat and life history of marine and freshwater fishes, and 47400 images and drawings. The site can be searched by common and scientific name, country, ecosystem, and topic. Well worth a visit if only to marvel at the number and diversity of fishes.

This is an online database of three-dimensional laser-scanned digital models of the bones which make up the skeletons of birds from various museum collections. Each model is accompnied by a comprehensive description, a photograph of the original specimen and links to related models on the site and to other websites of interest for that species. Once registered as a user, the many features of the site, including free download of 3D models are available for use for educational and research purposes. An excellent resource!!

A site created by Jake Socha, of Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois. Sochas research on flying tree snakes is described, and accompanied by videos and photographs of snakes in flight and at rest. Particularly interesting are images taken during field work carried out in Chicago, Singapore and Thailand showing the methods used to investigate the behaviour of these animals.

This site gives access to the extensive bird collection of the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam. 151 type specimens (the original individuals used to describe the species) are presented as 3D digital images which can be rotated and tilted. The Solomon Islands Corella, Japanese Waxwing, the Oriental Bay Owl and the Whinchat from the British Isles are just a few examples from a collection which features specimens from around the world.
There is a wealth of additional information accompanying each image, including
details of when and where the specimens were collected. Measurements of the specimens are given, along with comparisons with other individuals.
An interesting site, giving valuable access to the museum collection.
